Nicky Holford Travel Writing Journalist

Nicky Holford Travel Journallist

For most of her career Nicky worked as a news reporter for national newspapers in London, Toronto and New York. Her first job as a staff reporter job was at The Toronto Sun.

In New York she worked for World Chronicle a United Nations current affairs programme, the Daily Express bureau and as The Toronto Sun’s New York correspondent. She started working for The Evening Standard after beating the UK dailies to the John Lennon murder front page, when she became their New York correspondent.

In New York she also contributed regularly to Maclean’s Canada’s weekly news magazine. She earned a regular spot at Costello’s, the bar foreign correspondents frequented known for its original Thurber cartoons, Herbie the world’s worst waiter and as an after hours bank that would loan advances for journalists needing an immediate flight if a top story broke .

Returning to London, she worked as a reporter for The Mail on Sunday and later The Sunday Telegraph. She then entered the world of magazines, first as a freelancer for the Telegraph supplements and YOU magazine and then editing an American Express magazine for the Middle East, and the inflight publications for Kuwait Airways, Gulf Air and British Midland. She was also a regular contributor to High Life for British Airways.

She edited a number of high budget, contract magazines and then the At Home Series, celebrity led magazines. Subjects included cooking, gardening, interior design and travel where she worked with Antony Worrall Thompson, Charlie Dimmock, Laurence Llewelyn Bowen and Judith Chalmers.

While at the Canadian High Commission in London for Maclean’s she was offered a press trip to the Canadian Rockies. “The first time I had ever flown business or stayed in a 5 star hotel. It was a world I needed to be part of.”

Skiing became an obsession and after a winter of endless press trips writing for Harper’s, GQ, ski magazines and national newspapers she became the ski correspondent for The Guardian and snowboard editor for the Ski Club’s magazine, Ski and Board.

Many flights, hotels, mountain huts and couloirs later she is still ready to drop everything for that perfect powder day whether it is as far afield as Japan or the USA. Her role as one of the ski testers for Snow+Rock led her to a consultancy for ski fashion and a column on outdoor clothing and equipment in The Guardian. She has written and contributed to a number of guidebooks on travel, including several AA travel guides and Where to Ski and Snowboard. Other literary accomplishments include fiction, the publication of “Messages” by Harper Collins and a number of equestrian articles inspired by her ex-racehorse Joey.

She has tried three Olympic winter sports, the skeleton reaching 100 kph, the highest ski jump and the bob sleigh.

Her lust for adventure has taken her on the Haute Route, from Chamonix to Zermatt, to the top of Mount Kenya, heliskiing with condors in the Chilean Andes, galloping across the plains of Cordoba in Argentina, and to beaches of white sand in exotic locations. You can read about her latest adventure including a battle with a male baboon on the Chobe River in Botswana, in The Guardian travel pages.
